Indigo and Resist Dye Workshop - Tuesday, June 4th, 6pm - 9pm

$90.00

Tuesday, June 4th, 6pm - 9pm

Achieve brilliant blue hues and explore the magic of indigo!

In this 3 hour session, your instructor Jessie Mordine Young will conduct a brief presentation with an introduction on Indigo and its interesting yet complex history. The class will go over the cultivation process: how indigo transforms from a bright green leafy plant to a hardened blue cake, and then to a magical vat full of dyeing possibilities. This presentation will also include a few contemporary artists working with the material, as a source of inspiration.

Together, we will create a fructose indigo vat, so you can replicate the process at home. You will also learn how to maintain it, providing it with longevity for many more dye sessions thereafter. I will also demonstrate a variety of resist-dye techniques such as stitching, folding and binding that you can apply to fabric as a way of getting variations in a textile. We will also explore how one can achieve various shades of blue, by way of dipping and oxidation. Students will then implement these techniques into their fabrics to produce a range of unique and beautiful patterns.

The goal for this workshop is to provide you with the experience and knowledge to incorporate indigo dyeing into your own practice after the workshop.

For the in-person session, all materials will be included, and students will dye a set of 4 napkins, and additional materials will be available for purchase. Though you are welcome to bring additional (previously scoured) fabric to use in the vat. An email with instructions will go out a week before the class.

This is an introductory class for beginners, but all skills levels are welcome.

Lunch will not be provided, though refreshments will be served.

This class will take place in my art studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
