MY TEACHING ETHOS

Weaving is a process that has existed as long as language has been recorded, and it is a language and an art form of its own. My ability to understand this language is a product of the transference of weaving pedagogy. This channel of knowledge is embodied through observing and then emulating. The body adopts motions and rhythms that, when applied to object making, produce a unique structure, and then, a work of art.

I teach in various spaces, both in-person and online in an effort to connect through creativity. Read on to learn more about workshop offerings…

WEAVING

Weaving is a deliberate and contemplative craft, characterized by its inherently slow and meditative nature. As the shuttle glides through the warp threads and the weaver's hands deftly manipulate the weft, there is an undeniable sense of connection to the rhythmic, repetitive motions. With each pass, a textile begins to take shape, and the weaver becomes absorbed in the tactile and sensory experience of the loom. Time seems to stretch, allowing for deep reflection and a unique kind of mindfulness.

Weaving demands patience and a keen attention to detail, offering a respite from the fast-paced world, inviting us to slow down and find solace in the tranquil, methodical dance of threads, where creativity and inner calm intertwine.

I offer a variety or weaving workshops for various skill levels and age groups, which include but are not limited to: frame loom, table top, floor loom weaving, rug, and basket weaving.

NATURAL DYE

Natural dye a process where patience is rewarded as colors deepen and evolve, and every vat holds the potential for unique and unrepeatable outcomes. In this alchemical journey, we uncover the timeless connection between art and nature, where the mundane is transmuted into the extraordinary, and the dye vat becomes a vessel of wonder and enchantment.

To extract these hues, natural materials are combined with water, while the fibers are pre-treated with a natural metal salt called a mordant for lasting color adherence and longevity. Each plant imparts a unique, unrepeatable color influenced by factors such as soil, sun, rain, harvest time, and water quality. These variations distinguish natural dyes from synthetic, petrochemical-derived colorants.

In our eco-conscious approach, we minimize energy usage by patiently avoiding additional heat for mordanting or extraction. We recognize the importance of conserving water, a precious resource, and employ techniques like bundle dyeing, reusing mordant baths, and concentrating dyebaths for future use, even utilizing captured rainwater. To further reduce environmental impact, we explore innovative approaches, like utilizing kitchen scraps from restaurants for color and experimenting with alternative, plant-based mordants instead of mined metal salts.
